Deschooling

School at home or Homeschool …

set the rhythm for your home

School at home is not the same as homeschooling. Homeschooling is a lifestyle choice and a philosophy of life-long learning. In our home, we lean toward the philosophy of “unschooling” but with some structure. I’ll write another post about what lesson planning looks like for me another day. Today, let’s talk about “deschooling” or the idea of transitioning your children to successful learning at home. When the pandemic hit several months ago, the transition to school at home was abrupt for many families. Even for those of us who homeschool, we are not entirely immune from the effects as being forced to stay home is not our norm. We miss our field trips and days out and about with friends. I recently recorded this short video about “deschooling” and shared it on our Facebook Group. I think “deschooling” will also be important to the virtual school adjustment… try to embrace the fact that it’s not the same as regular school for your kids.

Here’s a few resources that we have at our house that helps us navigate learning as a lifestyle by reading books and engaging in learning activities.

Butterfly Kit

My youngest daughter and I grew butterflies over the last couple of weeks as part of our “getting ready for school” process. We released them 2 days after they left their cocoons. It was bittersweet but we hope the flowers in our garden will entice them to return and say “hello!”
