Welcome to our Bible study on the profound insights shared in the No More Silos podcast episode titled “Why We Should All Be Theologians: Sabbath, Feb 16, 2024″ with Dr. Erika Santiago. In this study, we will explore key themes from the Letter to the Hebrews and the concept of Sabbath rest. Our goal is to deepen our understanding of theology and cultivate a lifestyle of restful faith in God.

Session 1: Theology for Everyone Scripture Focus: Hebrews 1:1-3

  • Reflect on the opening verses of Hebrews, where the author establishes the supremacy of Christ and the importance of paying close attention to His message.
  • Discuss what it means to be a theologian in the context of everyday life. How can we engage in theological reflection and study in practical ways?
  • Explore the idea that theology is not reserved for scholars but is accessible to all believers. How does this perspective challenge or inspire you in your faith journey?

Session 2: The Call to Rest Scripture Focus: Hebrews 4:1-11

  • Read Hebrews 4:1-11 and examine the author’s discussion of entering God’s rest.
  • Discuss the significance of Sabbath rest in the Christian life. How does Sabbath observance contribute to our spiritual health and well-being?
  • Consider the cultural barriers to embracing rest in our modern society. How can we overcome these barriers and prioritize rest in our lives?

Session 3: The Practice of Sabbath Scripture Focus: Mark 2:23-28

  • Study Mark 2:23-28, where Jesus challenges the legalistic understanding of Sabbath observance.
  • Reflect on the purpose of Sabbath as a day of rest and rejuvenation. How can we honor the spirit of Sabbath while also engaging in acts of mercy and compassion?
  • Share practical strategies for incorporating Sabbath rest into your weekly rhythm. What intentional practices can help you experience the rest that God desires for you?

Session 4: Theology in Action Scripture Focus: Hebrews 13:20-21

  • Explore Hebrews 13:20-21, where the author offers a benediction invoking God’s peace and equipping for every good work.
  • Discuss the connection between theological understanding and practical action. How does our knowledge of God inform our daily choices and interactions?
  • Brainstorm ways to live out our faith as theologians of rest in our communities and spheres of influence. How can we embody God’s love and grace in tangible ways?

As we conclude our study, let us remember the words of Hebrews 4:9, which proclaim that “there remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God.” May we embrace our calling as theologians of rest, seeking to deepen our understanding of God’s truth and finding refuge in His presence. Amen.
